JoAnn Hackos

JoAnn Hackos, Ph.D., is a founding member and secretary of the DITA Technical Committee.

JoAnn is the founder and president of Comtech Services Inc., which provides conferences and workshops around the world on best practices, content management, minimalism, single-source publishing, and of course DITA.

She is a fellow and past president of the Society for Technical Communication (STC).

She was an early supporter of single source, minimalism, and task orientation, and is the probable source for the three basic information types in DITA - task, concept, and reference. These three first appeared in print in JoAnn's "Managing Your Documentation Projects," 1994, p. 236-7.

JoAnn is a noted lecturer, consultant, and author of a number of books about technical communication and information development.

Her books include:

  • Content Management for Dynamic Web Delivery (Wiley 2002)
  • Managing Your Documentation Projects (Wiley 1994)
  • Standards for Online Communication (Wiley 1997)

She is the editor of Best Practices, a publication of her Center for Information-Management Development.
